The Taberville Prairie Plains IBA was historically dominated by tallgrass prairie, with some riparian timber (Nigh and Schroeder 2002). Now the IBA is dominated by fescue pasture and hay meadows and cropland. Tallgrass prairie remnants, however, are common. Fourteen percent of the Taberville Prairie Conservation Area IBA is publicly-owned conservation land, all of which is included in the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Taberville Prairie Conservation Area (CA) (1,766 acres, 715 ha) and Harry S. Truman Reservoir land (US Army Corps of Egineers ) (168 acres, 68 ha).

Greater Prairie-chickens still occur in the IBA landscape. Other grassland birds that use the tallgrass prairie within this IBA include Bell’s Vireo, Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Smith’s Longspur, Northern Harrier (with evidence of nesting), and Upland Sandpiper (Palmer and Palmer 2001).

Taberville Prairie Plains IBA is encompassed in MDC’s Marmaton / Wah’ Kon-tah Conservation Opportunity Area. Challenges outlined by MDC (2005) for the area include grassland protection and restoration. Greater Prairie-Chicken abundance within this IBA is second only to that at the Pawnee Prairie/Grand River Grasslands IBA. The local Greater Prairie-Chicken population is also under consideration by MDC for supplementation through translocations.
